چکیده

Tropical forests have been rapidly deforested and degradation worldwide has outpaced biodiversity field sampling. No study to date assessed the effects of insular habitats induced by hydroelectric dams on Amazonian understory plants. Fern community responses anthropogenic tropical forest islands can be revealed at a faster pace using simple cheap, yet informative, protocols that could applied non-specialists. Specifically Amazon, world's largest rainforest, unprecedented expansion hydropower implemented last decades, resulting wholesale fragmentation pristine (Lees 2016; Winemiller 2016). Large projects established lowland submerge vast areas, creating archipelagos inducing rapid erosion (Benchimol & Peres, 2015b). Consequently, understanding how diversity is shaped fragmented hydro-reservoirs utmost importance identify mechanisms governing persistence newly isolated biotas propose sound conservation strategies. Since publication MarArthur Wilson's book 1967 revealing revolutionary Theory Island Biogeography (TBI), area metrics became widely ecologists evaluate their fragments real world (i.e., embedded human-modified landscapes [Laurance, 2008]). predicted TBI, greater shorter its nearby mainland, higher expected occur, given differential probabilities extinction colonization. Yet, habitat quality good therefore scrutinize landscapes. growing plants reservoirs, mostly focusing trees lianas 2015a; Jones 2017, 2019; Patch-scale attributes (e.g. edge-mediated disturbance) reported main factors affecting structure. However, neotropical understorey Ferns (collectively known pteridophytes) comprise diverse, conspicuous distributed group are well-recognized indicator (Salovaara 2004; Zuquim 2014). In undisturbed forests, soils determinant communities scales (Tuomisto 2003; Zuquim, Costa, 2009) tends increase soil fertility disturbances, including deforestation, fires alter environmental conditions might exert significant islands. disturbance dynamics potential source propagules play major role, perhaps overriding original baseline forests. increasing across Amazon basin, plant inventories still scant geographically biased (Feeley Silman, 2011; Hopkins, 2007; Schulman 2007). critical period effects in foreign language learning:the influence of maturational state on the acquisition of reading, writing, and grammar in english as a foreign language

since the 1960s the age effects on learning both first and second language have been explored by many linguists and applied linguists (e.g lennerberg, 1967; schachter, 1996; long, 1990) and the existence of critical period for language acquisition was found to be a common ground of all these studies. in spite of some common findings, some issues about the impacts of age on acquiring a second or...

Mutagenic effects of mercury pollution as revealed by micronucleus test on three Amazonian fish species.

Genotoxic effect of mercury pollution over Amazonian fish species was evaluated by using the micronucleus test (MNT). Distinct mean frequencies of micronuclei (MN) were observed in three trophically distinct characin fish species collected in two riverine environments in the Amazon Basin: the Madeira (polluted area) and the Solimões (unpolluted area) rivers. Mean frequencies of MN observed in P...

Persistent effects of a severe drought on Amazonian forest canopy.

Recent Amazonian droughts have drawn attention to the vulnerability of tropical forests to climate perturbations. Satellite and in situ observations have shown an increase in fire occurrence during drought years and tree mortality following severe droughts, but to date there has been no assessment of long-term impacts of these droughts across landscapes in Amazonia. Here, we use satellite micro...
